I've had a lot of spare time on my hands of late, so at last I have been able to get a small power plant up and running. I have been wanting to do this for years! The system has 4 x 4Ah (D) nicads for power storage. Four solar panels provide about 320 mA of power on a sunny day. The wind generator can provide up to 300 mA.
The wind generator uses a old stepper motor from a laser
printer.   The power is used to run high output LED's around
the garden and these are controlled by the light sensor and a modified
old central heating clock to help conserve the power. The Ni-Cads can run
the lamps for 8 days without any charge. I have had to move the wind generator
away from the tree, as it seemed to be causing a bit of turbulence and
stopping it. It seems to generate from about  10 mph now.  I
have also found that the house is blocking the sun, now its winter and
its low! So I will have to move the panels.
